Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 8, 2026

In short

  • No account: we never ask for your name, email or phone number.
  • Your choices (language, sources, risk levels) stay on your phone.
  • No advertising, no sale of information, no audience measurement tools.
  • The suricateapp.ca website sets no cookies.

1. Who we are

Suricate is a mobile app published by Kanata Média, a sole proprietorship based in Quebec, Canada (“Kanata Média”, “we”, “us”). This policy explains what information we process when you use the Suricate app or the suricateapp.ca website, why, and what your rights are.

Person in charge of the protection of personal information: the founder of Kanata Média. Contact: contact@suricateapp.ca.

2. Information we process

Your preferences. The language, sources, risk levels and notification setting you choose are stored only on your phone. They are not sent to our database.

Notifications. If you allow notifications, Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging service assigns your phone a technical identifier (a “token”). The app subscribes this token to topics matching your choices, for example “food recalls in English, high risk”. Google and, on iPhone, Apple process this token to deliver notifications. We do not store this token on our servers and we never send a notification to a specific device: each notification is sent to a topic.

Technical connection data. When the app loads recalls, or when you visit suricateapp.ca, our servers automatically receive technical information: IP address, device and system type, date and time, page or resource requested. It is used to run the service, protect it against abuse and fix errors. It is kept in our providers’ logs for a limited time. We do not use it to identify you or to build a profile.

If you write to us. We receive your email address and the content of your message. They are used only to reply to you and are kept for no more than two years after our last exchange.

If you make a donation. Payment is processed by your phone’s app store (Apple’s App Store or Google Play). We do not receive your name or your payment details.

3. What we do not do

  • We do not create accounts and do not ask for any identity information.
  • We do not access your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
  • We show no advertising and use no audience measurement tools.
  • We do not sell, rent or trade any personal information.
  • We make no decision based exclusively on automated processing of your information.
  • The suricateapp.ca website sets no cookies and loads no content from third-party sites.

4. Our providers and where information is processed

To operate, Suricate relies on providers that process some information on our behalf, following our instructions and only for the purposes described here:

  • Supabase: recall database, hosted in Canada (Montreal);
  • Google (Google Cloud and Firebase Cloud Messaging): hosting of the app server and delivery of notifications;
  • Apple: delivery of notifications on iPhone;
  • Hostinger: hosting of the suricateapp.ca website and our email;
  • Apple and Google: processing of in-app payments.

Some of these providers process information outside Quebec and Canada, in particular in the United States. That information may then be subject to the laws of those countries.

When you open the official notice for a recall, you leave Suricate for the website of the agency that published it. Its own privacy policy then applies.

5. Security

All communications between the app, the website and our servers are encrypted. Access to our tools is limited and protected. Above all, we reduce risk at the source by collecting as little information as possible.

If a confidentiality incident presents a risk of serious injury, we will notify the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec and the people concerned, as required by law.

6. Your rights and choices

At any time, you can:

  • turn off notifications in the app (Alerts tab) or in your phone’s settings: your phone is then unsubscribed from the topics;
  • change your language, source and risk level choices;
  • delete the app: the preferences stored on your phone are deleted with it;
  • ask us for access to the information we hold about you, its correction or its deletion, or withdraw your consent.

To exercise these rights, write to contact@suricateapp.ca. We reply within 30 days. Because we hold very little information, we may hold none about you.

If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

7. Children

Suricate is intended for the general public. Since the app asks for no identity information, we do not knowingly collect information about children.

8. Changes to this policy

We may change this policy, for example if the app changes. The date of the last update appears at the top of this page. If we make an important change, we will let you know in the app.

9. Contact us
