Terms of Use
Preliminary version, October 2026, under legal review. These terms are not yet in effect.
1. Who we are
Suricate is a mobile app published by Kanata Média, a sole proprietorship based in Quebec, Canada (“Kanata Média”, “we”, “us”). To contact us: contact@suricateapp.ca.
2. Accepting these terms
By installing or using Suricate, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the app.
They apply together with the Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your personal information.
3. What Suricate does
Suricate gathers recall notices published by Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Transport Canada. It displays them in the app and can send you notifications based on the sources and risk levels you choose.
Suricate is an independent service. It is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Government of Canada or any of its agencies.
4. Suricate does not replace official notices
The information shown in Suricate comes from notices published by official agencies. It is provided for general information. Only the official notice is authoritative: before making a decision (throwing out or returning a product, stopping its use, having a vehicle repaired), check the official notice using the link included in every recall.
Suricate does not provide medical advice. If you think you have been exposed to a dangerous product or you have symptoms, contact a health professional. In an emergency, call 911.
5. Delays, completeness and notifications
- We check for new notices at regular intervals, more often during the day. There may therefore be a delay between the publication of a notice and its appearance in Suricate.
- We do not guarantee that every published notice will be included, or that it will be included without error or interruption. A notice may be changed or withdrawn by the agency that published it.
- Notifications are delivered through Apple and Google services. Whether you receive them depends on those services, your phone settings and your connection. We do not guarantee their delivery or timing.
- Some recalls are aimed only at professionals, institutions or industry. They may appear in the app without triggering a notification.
- The text of each notice is the one published by the agency, in English and in French. If one version is not yet available, the other may be shown temporarily.
6. Permitted use
Suricate is offered for personal, non-commercial use. You agree not to:
- systematically copy, extract or reuse the app’s content, or use it commercially;
- disrupt the operation of the app or the servers that run it, or attempt to access them without authorization;
- decompile or disassemble the app, except to the extent permitted by law;
- present Suricate or its content as an official government communication.
7. Free service and donations
Suricate is free. You may make an optional donation from the app. Payment is processed by your phone’s app store (App Store or Google Play), under its own terms.
A donation does not entitle you to any benefit, service or consideration. Kanata Média is not a registered charity: no tax receipt is issued. For any question about a donation, write to contact@suricateapp.ca.
8. Intellectual property
The Suricate name, its logo, the app and the suricateapp.ca website belong to Kanata Média.
Recall notices are reproduced under the Open Government Licence – Canada. Names, trademarks and images of recalled products belong to their respective owners.
9. Links to other websites
Suricate contains links to official agency websites and other websites. We do not control their content and are not responsible for it.
10. Service availability
We may change, suspend or discontinue all or part of Suricate, in particular for maintenance, security or improvements.
11. Liability
Suricate is provided as is and as available. To the extent permitted by law, Kanata Média is not liable for damages resulting from a delay, error or omission in the information displayed, from a notification not being received, or from a decision made solely on the basis of the app without checking the official notice.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for bodily or moral injury, or for intentional or gross fault. Nothing in them deprives a consumer of the rights granted by Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act or any other applicable law.
12. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. The date of the last update appears at the top of this page. If we make an important change, we will inform you in the app before it takes effect, within the time required by law. If you keep using Suricate afterwards, you accept the new terms.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute falls under the jurisdiction of the courts of Quebec, without depriving a consumer of the right to go to the court of their place of residence.
14. Language
These terms are written in French and in English. In case of discrepancy, the French version prevails.
